Hi December 2023. I had just resigned from an advisory firm in Fort Worth. A personality mismatch, not the right fit, whatever you want to call it. Biggie and Tupac blasting, I let the speakers do the work for thirty miles. What am I going to do next? Somewhere on that drive the fear burned off and something steadier took its place. Call it conviction. Call it calling. I believe God had bigger plans, and I could already feel the outline of them. We sing "Good Plans," by Red Rock Worship in church. Do we believe it? My wife was home, working from home, pregnant with our fourth son. I told her I was starting my own firm. I said, "I am tired of making money for other people." Serving clients well and building something of my own are not contrasting concepts. God's timing is not our timing. God's purposes far exceed our understanding or scope, ask Isaiah (Isa 55:8-9). Yes, I'm preaching. BLUF: I built Exponential Advisors for one reason. The people most disciplined about the mission are too often the least protected at home. I watched it happen for years. I was not willing to keep watching. The Drift I Couldn't UnseeI have spent a career around Soldiers, and I have seen what single-minded dedication quietly costs. The same leader who will rehearse a mission until it is flawless will run a life's savings through a one-click investing app. Draft a generic will at a pre-mob site in the time it takes to fill out a form. Lean on SGLI as if a single insurance policy provides adequate coverage for those they love most. That is not carelessness. It is focus aimed in one direction. The mission gets everything. The home front gets whatever is left over, which is usually a mandatory "fun" day, hype, and hope. The Army says it cares about families, but there's one thing in the Army that trumps everything else: The Mission. Why the Usual Playbook Fails UsWhen these leaders finally do reach for help, the transition gets sold to them as a stack of separate decisions. The Transition Assistance Program is just that, a program. How many life-changing experiences happen through a program? Transformation takes place through people, not programs. Man is looking for better methods.
God is looking for better men.
Man is God's method. But these decisions do not sit on clean ground. SBP, TSP, and civilian compensation interact. We call it the Decision Triangle℠. Get the sequence wrong and three reasonable choices can quietly work against each other, in taxes, in survivor coverage, and in what your family actually needs (or gets). What was missing was never another product or program. It was a fiduciary in your corner who looks at all three together, answers only to you, and is paid the same no matter what you decide. Fee-only. No commissions. Nothing to sell you but clarity. A counselor with a calculator. Why I Built Exponential AdvisorsSo I built the firm I wanted those leaders to trust. I built the firm, like Jim Collins said, to last. I built the firm because when God calls you to do something, you don't run away like Jonah. I am a husband, a father, an entrepreneur, and a chaplain. Every one of those roles runs on the same fuel: discipline, faith, persistence, patience, wisdom, grace, and above all, love. Our family motto is borrowed from the Navy Seals: The only easy day was yesterday. Small, faithful steps compound over a lifetime, in a family and in a plan. That is the whole idea behind the name. I had no interest in becoming one more advisor who blends into the staid financial crowd. So I built something deliberately different. Operational Wealth Stewardship℠ brings faith, fiduciary competence, digital-asset literacy, and plain human empathy into one coordinated plan. Not different for the sake of being different. Different because the people I serve deserve more than the status quo. Ordinary is unacceptable. I do not go with the flow. I create the flow. And I am clear about who is actually steering. God is the captain and commander of this ship. Where to StartYou do not need to hire anyone to find out where you stand. Before you make a single irreversible move, get an honest read on your blind spots across SBP, TSP, civilian compensation, taxes, and survivor protection. Take the Veteran Financial Blindspot Assessment. It is free, takes a few minutes, and was built for leaders inside the retirement transition window. You will see exactly which decisions are still standing open. That truck ride is still the best business plan I have ever written. Biggie on the speakers, a fourth son on the way, and one decision: stop building other people's firms and start building ours. The only easy day was yesterday, and I would not trade today to get it back. This is educational information and not individualized tax, legal, or investment advice. Verify against current year data.
