Door Knockers, Stock Pickers, and Real Financial Planning: Know the Difference

Hey Reader,

Welcome back to Exponential Purpose. If you're new here, I'm Joshua Brooks, a Certified Financial Planner® who focuses on helping Army veterans navigate the complex world of personal finance. Today, we're examining a distinction that many people may not be aware of, but should be.

Have you ever had someone knock on your door and claim to be a financial advisor? I worked for a company like that, which referred to it as "residential prospecting." I've had a few advisors knock on my door, but not as many now that I live in a more rural area; mainly, it's just solar panel and pest control salespeople.

Financial Advising ≠ Financial Planning

What drives me crazy is that people often use "financial advisor" and "financial planner" interchangeably. They're not the same thing. At all. And understanding the difference could save you thousands of dollars and years of frustration.

Financial advising is typically investment-centric. Think of it as someone who helps you pick stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. They're often compensated through commissions on the products they sell you. Their primary question is: "How should you invest your money?"

Financial planning is a comprehensive life planning process that involves managing money. We examine your entire financial picture, including cash flow, taxes, insurance, estate planning, retirement planning, and investments. But investments are just one piece of the puzzle. Our primary question is: "What do you want your life to look like, and how do we use money as a tool to get you there?"

When people tell me, "Don't you all just help with how we spend our money and help us save?" I smile and nod. Yes, we do cash management. But that's like saying a surgeon "just cuts people open." Technically accurate, but it misses the point entirely.

As a fee-only financial planner affiliated with XY Planning Network, I offer fee-for-service financial planning. No commissions. No product sales. And, even more, full disclosure of conflicts of interest. So you get the most valuable product: COMPREHENSIVE PLANNING TAILORED TO YOUR SITUATION.

For veterans, this distinction matters even more. You're dealing with VA disability benefits, TSP rollovers, military pensions, and unique tax situations that your typical commission-based advisor might not fully understand. You need someone who sees the whole picture.

The "Big, Beautiful Tax Bill" and What It Means for Veterans

President Trump signed The One Big Beautiful Bill into law on July 4th—perfect timing for Independence Day. While the full implications will unfold over time, here are the key provisions that could impact veterans:

No Tax on Social Security: NO tax on Social Security means your Social Security benefits are now completely tax-free. For many retired veterans, this is a significant win.

Enhanced Child Tax Credit: Permanently increasing the Child Tax Credit for more than 40 million families provides ongoing relief for veteran families raising children.

No Tax on Tips or Overtime: NO tax on Tips. NO tax on Overtime. While this might not directly impact all veterans, those working in hospitality or jobs with significant overtime will see real benefits.

Senior Citizens Standard Deduction: From 2025 through 2028, senior citizens will receive a $6,000 boost to their standard deduction, with phase-outs beginning at $75,000 for individuals.

The devil is always in the details with tax legislation, and how these changes interact with VA disability benefits, military pensions, and state taxes will vary depending on the individual situation. This is exactly why comprehensive financial planning matters—we need to understand how all these pieces fit together for YOUR specific circumstances.

Crypto FOMO: Education Over Emotion

Bitcoin hit another all-time high recently.

Ethereum jumped 14% in a week, surpassing the elusive $3,000 mark (though still shy of its $4,000+ peak). And predictably, the FOMO is real.

Here's the thing about cryptocurrency: it's not going anywhere. It's a legitimate asset class that can play a role in a diversified portfolio. At Exponential Advisors, we incorporate crypto into our financial planning process when it is suitable for the client's situation and risk tolerance.

However—and this is crucial—crypto should never be a decision made on emotion. As Warren Buffett reminds us, "Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful." The time to consider crypto isn't when everyone's talking about it; it's when it fits logically into your overall financial plan.

Education is power. If you're interested in crypto, learn about it first. Understand the technology, the risks, the volatility, and how it might fit (or not fit) into your long-term financial goals. Don't let FOMO drive your investment decisions.

Final Thoughts

Whether we're talking about the difference between financial advising and planning, understanding new tax legislation, or evaluating crypto investments, the theme remains consistent: comprehensive planning beats reactive decision-making every time.

Your financial life is complex. Your military service created unique opportunities and challenges that require thoughtful, personalized planning. Don't settle for generic advice or product sales disguised as planning.

Stay exponential,
