Hi Reader, Many of my readers actively serve in the military. Some of you are retired. Others are civilians. Today, I'm writing about civilian compensation packages. If this doesn't apply to you, feel free to stop reading here. Compensation packages can be generous. But they're also complex. This means that it takes time to read the fine print. Time is often what busy employees don't have a lot of. It's important to understand the vesting schedule, Restricted Stock Units, and minutiae of retirement planning so that you can take full advantage of these benefits and make informed decisions. Why try to repair your own car when you can have a trained mechanic handle it with less stress, better tools, and better outcomes? The analogy applies to financial planning. I work in this field every day and analyze client compensation packages, tax returns, and investment portfolios. One answer from the set: “Let's talk about overconcentration. You may or may not have heard about it. It's when you have a concentrated position (think orange juice concentrate), which generally negatively impacts your portfolio's diversification (frozen orange juice chunks, though, may be good on a hot Texas day). Diversification is a good thing; overconcentration, not so much.” Make sure you don't have too much frozen orange juice concentrate in your portfolio.
