The Labor You Never See

Hello Reader,

While you sleep, a police officer is working.

How often do you take a moment to think about the people who watch and work while we are sleeping? This is not meant to guilt-trip you. The Book of Common Prayer includes this liturgical prayer:

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep.
Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love's sake. Amen.

Is that not beautiful?

Pause. Saints who spent deep time in God's presence wrote these words. This was not AI-generated.

The words pour out poetic praise. They show how God's love moves through a hundred quiet places.

The world runs on invisible labor. Not the labor defined by economists, but work, the opening of a car door on a dimly lit highway by a Texas State Trooper, the slow swish of the mop across the lobby of the Hilton Hotel in Boise. The low cry of the baby at midnight, as the NICU nurse gently caresses.

The nurse on the night shift.

The lineman in the storm.

The spouse scrubbing the toilet.

The mechanic wrenching the lug nut.

The farmer, the dispatcher, the janitor, the chaplain, the counselor, the parent pacing the hallway at 2:02 a.m.

Most of what keeps life stable is never seen by the people who benefit from it.

Military people intuitively understand this. It's part of the warp and woof of working together.

Every successful mission depends on work that doesn't get a ribbon or award on the uniform. The convoy rolls because someone loaded it. The commander briefs because someone built the slide deck. The formation moves because dozens of unnamed people handled the details.

Civilian life is no different.

A mature life begins when we stop assuming stability is automatic and start recognizing the labor that sustains it.

Gratitude is not sentimentality.

It is situational awareness.

And maybe one of the most countercultural things we can do is notice the people whose work makes our peace possible.

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.
Psalm 127:1
