Hi Reader,
People sometimes ask me, or they forget, which one is the real job. Chaplain or financial planner.
The honest answer: I did not leave one calling to do the other. I hold both. By training I am a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and a fee-only fiduciary. By calling I am an actively serving Army Reserve chaplain. Before either of those, I was an enlisted infantry Soldier. More than two decades in uniform and counting.
Most of what my profession talks about is machinery. Better software. Better AI. Better models. All of it useful. None of it able to sit across the table from a family when the easy answer disappears, like a wayward child deciding whether to join the military, become a YouTube creator, or just stay home with the parents.
So let me tell you what the work looks like.
There is a technical layer, and it is real. Your pension election, your Thrift Savings Plan, and your first civilian compensation package must be seen as one operation, sequenced before any single piece is signed. That takes study, documentation, and fiduciary discipline: life insurance reviews, security clearance jobs, estate planning connections.
I take that layer seriously. It is the floor of the profession, not the ceiling. Any competent planner should be able to run the numbers, coordinate with a tax professional, or sit in an attorney's office with a client.
I have spent years sitting with Soldiers and families when the decision was technical, emotional, relational, and permanent all at once.
The training changes how you see the work. The Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP) is not merely an actuarial election. It is a family-continuity decision. Military retirement is not merely a date. It is an identity handoff.
A confident commander can run a battalion and still feel embarrassment, or cognitive stress, when the pension, the TSP, the VA exams, the insurance contracts, the tax files, and the civilian offer letter all arrive in the same month. I have watched it happen. Presence is knowing not to answer that weight with a faster calculation.
Some decisions need analysis. The hardest ones also need presence. Pastoral steadiness and fiduciary discipline belong in the same room.
I do not have a pile of unrelated identities. The infantry taught me respect for consequence. The chaplaincy taught me presence, listening, and how to stay steady when a conversation turns heavy. The CFP® work taught me technical rigor and the structure of a written plan. Building a firm taught me what it feels like to carry an uncertain future, which is exactly what every transitioning family is doing.
And yes, on occasion, I am the guy who will drop a few bars so the room remembers it. That surprises people. It's meant to. The rhythm carries the same discipline as the plan: slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
All of it converges on one obligation. To carry trust carefully.
That is the purpose behind Exponential Advisors. Not merely a better method, but the intention to become the kind of steward this work requires.
What did your years in uniform train you to carry that a spreadsheet never could? Hit reply and tell me. I read every response.
